A lot of people think they are merely for playing games and having fun but you can also use them as part of your fitness training regime. A prime example is a personal trainer known as Tim Donahey, who decided to put the activeness of playing VR to the test by playing it for one hour for fifty days straight. In this time he achieved some amazing results, shrinking his waist by three inches and losing fourteen pounds (lbs) in weight. Box VR

Box VR is the equivalent of Guitar Hero where you have to hit notes that are flying at you to up-beat electronic music. It is a fantastic way to work out your upper body and arms as well as improve your cardio and it even includes a calorie counter! Box VR is an Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality game. It has earned 3 VR Fitness Insider – VR Fitness Awards!

Sprint Vector

A competitive racing game which involves you pumping blood through your arms, the faster they move, the faster you sprint. This arcade racing game is definitely worth a go as it will give you a solid upper body workout as you speed around 12 different tracks. Sprint Vector is a game for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR, and took home a VR Fitness Award for Best VR Arm Workout.


Last month we wrote about Tabata, a form of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Bitslap is just that but using VR. Similar to the arcade dance machines but using your arms, hit cubes in a sequence. The more you hit, the more that spawn! It is important to hit the cubes in the order that they appear to maintain your score. The game uses punching intervals that rival Tabata which in turn work your upper body while you have to squat to reach the lower cubes. Bitslap is compatible with the HTC Vive headset.

The Fastest Fist

Put yourself through some intense boxing training with a Bruce Lee lookalike. You will be shadowboxing for a warm up then punching dynamically. Eventually the trainer will start hitting back, blocks will give you negative points and won’t be effective for your lower body, but dodging will maintain your points increase. The VR Institute of Health and Exercise compares this game to tennis. The Fastest Fist is available for the HTC Vive headset.


A high-energy and music driven VR game in which you can even use your own tracks. Players punch, block and coordinate their coloured controllers, similar to Box VR. You have to beat the orbs that are flying towards you at various speeds and locations. Defending yourself successfully is an effective upper body exercise. Audioshield is available for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Hot Squat

Bring on the wall! Stand and squat through the virtual obstacles and hold the squat until you make it to the other side. Hot Squat is an entry-level fitness VR game that will be a great addition to your fitness regime if you are a first time VR fitness user. Hot Squat can be played on the HTC Vive headset.
