Fifteen years ago in a little bar in ‘small town’ Australia, two guys had the idea to grow a moustache for Men’s health charities. They recruited 30 willing ‘compadres’ who met the challenge with such enthusiasm that it was clear to all, this unique fundraising idea was going to catch on.
And catch on it did. In 2014 the men’s health movement ‘Movember’ was fully realised, with a formal concept, registered company, website and logo in place. It’s chosen charity was prostate cancer and in this first year, it received AUD 54,000 from Movember, thanks to 450 participants in Australia, Spain and the UK.
Year on year the charity, now registered as The Movember Foundation, attracts millions of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to support its annual fundraising efforts. Last year a record 22 countries participated and the lifetime total of 5,542,507 Moustaches was grown and 1200 men’s health projects funded.
Throughout Movember, men, women and children take part in all sorts of events and activities in support of the Foundation’s chosen causes, now adding testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention to its initial focus prostate cancer.
The Dandy Gent – Pledge to Movember
During November – sorry Movember – The Dandy Gent, is donating 50p for every beard/moustache trim, tidy or restyle carried out in its Irongate barber shop and £1 will be donated for all online sales of its products for whiskers – Beard Oils, Solid Bar Beard Shampoo and, naturally, Moustache Wax.
“Testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health are the ‘silent killers’ of men of all ages.” Said Shane O’Shaughnessy, Owner of The Dandy Gent.
“Guys just don’t seem to like talking about their health concerns or problems down below, and conditions such as testicular and prostate cancer, in particular, don’t get diagnosed until it’s too late.
As well as offering discounts to raise awareness of the fundraising, The Dandy Gent will have men’s health literature available from 1st November, for anyone who would like to know more about men’s health and how to spot potential problems.
“Awareness is the key to stopping this, and we, naturally, are happy to spread the word where we can.” Concluded Shane.
